Look, I’m Not Saying I’m Addicted…
But let’s be honest here. It’s March, and I’m already 36 hours deep into a college basketball binge that’s got my wife threatening to hide my remote. Again. I’m not proud, but I’m not sorry either. This is the time of year when the whole damn country loses its collective mind over 19-year-olds throwing up three-pointers.
I remember back in 2003, when I was covering the tournament for the Daily Chronicle in Peoria. We had this guy, let’s call him Marcus, who swore up and down that Hampton was gonna win it all. Hampton! The team that had to play in a interesting facts knowledge guide of a first-round upset just to get in. And you know what? He was right. That’s the beauty of this tournament. It’s chaos. It’s madness. It’s the only time of year when a 16-seed can actually beat a 1-seed.
And frankly, that’s what keeps us all coming back. The unpredictability. The drama. The sheer, unadulterated excitement of it all.
But Here’s the Thing…
I was having coffee with a colleague named Dave last Tuesday, and he said something that stuck with me. He said, “You know what’s crazy? We all act like we know what we’re talking about during this tournament, but half the time, we’re just making stuff up as we go along.”
And he’s right. I mean, look at me. I’m over here analyzing bracketology like I’m some kind of statistical genius. In reality, I’m just a guy who watched too much ESPN growing up in his parents’ basement.
But here’s the thing about college basketball. It doesn’t care if you’re an expert or a fraud. It doesn’t care if you’ve been watching for 20 years or 20 days. It’s a game that rewards heart, hustle, and a little bit of luck. And that’s why we all love it.
I remember back in 2010, when Butler almost won it all. Gordon Hayward’s half-court shot at the buzzer? That was the kind of moment that makes you believe in miracles. It was like the basketball gods were looking down and saying, “Hey, you know what? Let’s just see what happens.”
And That’s the Magic of March Madness
It’s not about the analytics. It’s not about the fancy stats. It’s not about the so-called “experts” who think they have it all figured out. It’s about the underdogs. It’s about the Cinderella stories. It’s about the moments that make you jump out of your seat and scream at the top of your lungs.
And yeah, maybe I’m a little too invested. Maybe I do spend way too much time obsessing over bracketology. Maybe I should probably spend more time with my family and less time watching college basketball. But you know what? I’m not gonna apologize for it. Because this is the one time of year when the whole country comes together to celebrate the beautiful chaos that is college basketball.
So bring on the madness. Bring on the upsets. Bring on the heartbreak and the triumph. Because that’s what March is all about. And I, for one, am gonna be right here, front and center, soaking it all in.
Which honestly nobody asked for but here we are.
Anyway, enough about me. Let’s talk about the real stars of the show – the players. The ones who are out there giving it their all, night after night, week after week. The ones who are making us believe in the impossible.
Like that kid from Gonzaga, let’s call him Jay. He’s been on fire lately, dropping 28 points in their last game. And you know what? He’s not even supposed to be the star of the team. But that’s the thing about college basketball. You never know who’s gonna step up and take the spotlight.
And that’s what keeps us all coming back for more. The unpredictability. The excitement. The sheer, unadulterated joy of watching these young athletes give it their all on the biggest stage of them all.
So here’s to March. Here’s to the madness. Here’s to the memories that will last a lifetime. And here’s to the one time of year when the whole country comes together to celebrate the beautiful game of college basketball.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a bracket to fill out. And a wife to apologize to. Again.
